Two sides, two purposes
The front of a property is a view. The patio is for people sitting in it. Everything changes once you are the one sitting under it. Nobody is grading the back yard from the street. What matters is whether the space still works after dark. The short version: the patio deserves its own plan. A roofline system does a great deal for the front of a house and very little for the space behind it. Two spaces, two briefs, and one design conversation that covers both.
Glare is the enemy
The fastest way to make a patio feel wrong is a bright fixture in somebody's line of sight. A bare bulb at eye height makes everything behind it disappear, so the yard turns into a black wall. The fix is to keep sources out of the sight line: down at the deck, overhead well above the eye, or hidden behind furniture.
The overhead layer
Strung lights above a patio give the space an edge overhead. A patio without them has no top to it. Add a canopy of light and the space closes in. Keep them soft, always.None of this costs much more than doing it badly, because the difference is mostly placement and color rather than the number of fixtures

How the pieces stack
Think of it as three jobs, not one fixture. Overhead, low, and accent. Separate switching matters more than people expect.
Commercial outdoor dining
For a business with outdoor seating, the lighting decides whether those tables get used after sunset. Bistro and string lighting over an outdoor dining area is what keeps guests seated once the sun goes. The same rules apply, only the consequences are measured in covers.
Lighting buys you months
Without light, the back yard has a curfew. A lit one stays open well past the point the sun stops cooperating. Mild evenings happen most of the year here, they just happen at night. The lighting is the thing standing between a nice evening and an unused patio.
Warm light near where people sit
Outdoor light brings company on a warm evening. Warmer light is less interesting to most insects, which conveniently matches what looks good anyway. It will not eliminate anything, and nobody should promise that. But it is a free consideration when choosing the setting.Worth adding: the same warm setting suits the roofline above the patio, so the two do not disagree with each other.
