Not the same as permanent work
Most outdoor lighting is an installation. Event lighting goes up for an occasion and comes back down. A wedding, a milestone birthday, a corporate evening, a reception: the lighting exists for a single evening. That changes everything about how it gets planned, starting with the fact that there is no second chance at it.Which changes how the whole thing has to be handled. An installation has time to be adjusted. An event gets one look. So the planning happens early, the what ifs get covered, and nothing important gets left to the day itself.
The one thing you cannot negotiate
Permanent work can slip a week. An event date is fixed. That means the conversation has to start earlier than people expect. A small display still requires the same sequence as a big one.
The unglamorous part
The most common outdoor event problem is not design, it is electricity. Ask about how it is getting powered before the design conversation feels finished. A beautiful plan with no way to power it is a drawing. And whoever is handling the lighting should be told what else is happening in the space, because a band, a caterer and a photographer all have requirements that touch the same square footage.
The contingency conversation
Outdoor events are subject to whatever the day brings. It is worth having the rain conversation in advance, even though it is not the fun part of planning. Having an answer in advance is the difference between an adjustment and a crisis.
Priorities
Two categories: the parts people photograph and the parts people walk on. Atmosphere lives overhead and at the focal point. The

The venue has rules
If the event is not at your own house, the property has its own requirements. When you can get in, what you can fasten to, and how fast it has to disappear are not yours to make. Introduce them before the week of. It is the cheapest thing you can do and it prevents the most.
Most people order more than they need
The instinct with an event is to fill the space. Outdoors after dark, a modest amount of light goes a very long way. Contrast carries the atmosphere. Even brightness does not. A designer who says you need less than you think is usually right.
